Dear Parent(s)/Carer(s)

Although we have only just finished the teaching term I thought you would welcome some more detailed information about arrangements for the beginning of the new academic year. I have also attached a separate letter about College Fund (click here), a new Contact Details sheet (word version, pdf version) for you to update if necessary and the latest Dates for your Diary (click here).

International Baccalaureate results
Congratulations go to our IB students who received their final results earlier this month. It has been another excellent year with students achieving some outstanding results.  The average points score was just over 36 (equivalent to 3 As at A level)and 11 students (26% of those entered) gaining 40 points or better. Six of our IB students have places to study medicine  and 75% students who applied to UCAS have places at Russell Group universities including one at Oxford and one at Cambridge. Sam Segal achieved the full 45 points - an amazing achievement.

A level, BTEC and GCSE Results
A Level results are available on Thursday 16th August and can be collected from the hall 9-11. On the same day most vocational (BTEC) certificates will be available for collection. GCSE results are published a week later on 23rd August and will be posted out, or can be collected 9-12 from reception. Advisory sessions run each day during the holiday from 16 to 23 August.

Students will need photo ID. If someone else (including a parent) is collecting on their behalf, they will need written authorisation and photo ID.

Summer Advisory Service after exam results 16-23 August. Following results in August we run an advisory service in College on each week day; appointments can be made via reception from the afternoon of 16 August. Our careers team are also available to help with university applications and clearing and our examinations office will be available to help with any queries about results.

We are happy to discuss issues by telephone interview if the student is out of the country and unable to attend in person.

Timetables and start of Autumn term for students progressing to Year 2 or 3
Timetables will be available for students progressing to Year 2 or 3 to view on My Varndean from lunchtime on Monday 10th September. If there are any issues with these, students can make appointments to discuss the problem with their Head of School. Teaching will start on Tuesday 11th September.

Management Changes
Jill Arnold Deputy Principal is retiring this year.  Jill has been a valued colleague and an asset to Varndean College for many years.  She has gained a reputation, not just in the College community but also in the wider community,  for her commitment to Varndean and in putting the needs of students first and foremost. Jill is not just an outstanding manager and leader; she is a first class teacher.  Jill is held in high regard by all that know her and we will miss her enormously.
Pete Bailey our Vice Principal (Curriculum) will be joined by Donna-Marie Janson, our new Vice Principal (Student Services).  Donna-Marie has a great deal of experience in Sixth Form Colleges, she has previously engaged at Bexhill Sixth Form College and The College of Richard Collyer and is currently serving at Richard Taunton’s Sixth Form College in Southampton.  I look forward to welcoming Donna-Marie to Varndean.

Contacting the College
The College will close to the public from Tuesday 24 July to Monday 13 August. It will reopen to the public from Tuesday 14 August in advance of examination results and advisory sessions.

In the meantime, I hope that you and your daughter/son/ward have a wonderful summer.
I look forward to seeing you in the new term.

With best wishes
Phil Harland
