Next steps for your young person

Dear Parents/ Carers

Next steps for your young person

I hope this email finds you all well and your young person has made the most of the mock opportunities to hone their skills.  I thought this would be an opportune moment to just remind you of key pathways that your young person may have chosen and how you can support them. These resources have been shared in tutorial with your young person.

Chosen UCAS - what next?

Please see the Next Steps powerpoint here. There is also information here on student finance.  If you need any further information please do email careers@varndean.ac.uk.

If they have not chosen University they are on our Career Starter Programme:

Please see the link here for the email that has been sent to students who have not opted for UCAS.  If this is your young person, please do encourage them to get involved.

If they are looking for an apprenticeship:

Students who engage with the Career Starter Programme will be given group and individual support to apply for apprenticeships. These links are also helpful:

Degree Apprenticeships - What you need to know.

Students need to consider if they are prepared to leave home and move away for a vacancy they want to apply for. If they want to remain local, use the 'Find Apprenticeship website https://www.findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk/apprenticeshipsearch - this allows a student to limit vacancies to a specific city or postcode.

Many college leavers work for a few years to increase their skills and sector knowledge - this makes their future apprenticeship applications more competitive. You can start a Degree Apprenticeship at any age.

If they are looking for a job:

FE Sussex, with government funding, has launched a new Landed App exclusively for young people to find employment and work experience in Sussex.  The promotional video is linked here.  The App is brand new and employers are currently joining.  All your young person needs to do is

download the App and register. They can then easily create a CV and apply for jobs through the App.  If you run your own business you can also register and advertise your latest vacancies on there.

They can also use:
