Year 1 Summer Progress Review
Sent to: Year 1

14 May 2026

Dear Students, Parents & Carers,

Important Year 1 Summer Term Information

The summer term is an important time for Year 1 students as they prepare for Year 2 and begin thinking about their next steps after college. Throughout the term, students will take part in activities to support progression planning, including university applications through UCAS, apprenticeships and career pathways.

Work Experience and Skills Week: 18th to 22nd May
There will be no Year 1 lessons during this week due to Work Experience and Skills Week and some Year 1 examinations. Students not involved in examinations will either complete a work placement they have sourced themselves, take part in a Social Action Project or attend a college Vocational Hub activity working with an employer or on a college-based project. Following the activity, students will record their engagement through Unifrog.

Summer Report Cards: Monday 1st June
Year 1 A-level and IB students have now completed their practice examinations, and vocational students will have completed at least one assessed unit. Summer report cards will be published on Monday 1st June, through MyVarndean and the Varndean Parent Portal.

Progress Review Meetings: Week of 15th June
All Year 1 students will have a one-to-one Progress Review Meeting with each of their teachers. These meetings will take place in lesson time and focus on progress during Year 1, targets for continued success and preparation for Year 2.

Parents Consultation Evening: Tuesday 30th June
The Progress Review Meetings will help prepare students and parents/carers for discussions at the parents' consultation evening. Details of how to book an appointment will be sent after half-term.

The Careers Team will also send students and parents/carers a summary of the key progression and careers activities taking place during the summer term.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to supporting students over the summer term as they prepare for a successful second year at Varndean Sixth Form College.

Kind Regards,

James Gordon

Deputy Principal
