Tutorial Yr 1 Term 3

Tutorial Programme Update - Summer Term: Focus on Progression

Dear Parent/Carer,

We are writing to update you on the key focus of our Tutorial Programme for this term. Throughout the Summer Term, Tutorial sessions will centre on Progression, supporting Year 1 students in planning their next steps after college.

Importance of Tutorial Attendance

Year 1 students must attend their Tutorial sessions this erm. These sessions provide crucial support and guidance as students consider their individual progression routesâ??whether towards higher education, employment, or apprenticeships. The process of planning for the future can feel overwhelming for some young people, and our resources are designed to ensure students understand the full range of options available to them.

Students will be encouraged to explore their progression plans independently and proactively, including engaging in discussions with their subject teachers, Personal Tutor, and the College Careers Team. They can also seek support by making appointments with the Careers Team via the 'Careers' tab on My Varndean.

UCAS Registration & Personal Statement Support

Students who are considering university will begin their UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) registration this term. All necessary guidance and support for UCAS registration will be delivered through Tutorial sessions.

Students will also receive instruction on writing a Personal Statement or Covering Letter. We encourage students to attend the Personal Statement Writing Day on Thursday 26 June, where they will take part in workshops and receive 1:1 feedback from visiting university staff. Students can sign up for these sessions in College.

Attendance at timetabled Tutorials is essential to ensure they receive these materials and access personalised guidance from their Personal Tutor.

Progression Week and University Information Day

All Year 1 students will take part in a university visit on Tuesday 24 June, attending either the University of Sussex or the University of Brighton. They will participate in a subject taster of their choice and receive valuable information about applying to and studying at university.

Progression Week runs from Monday 30 June to Friday 4 July, during which all Year 1 students are expected to complete a Work Experience placement. Students must record their in-person placement on the Unifrog Placement Tool by Friday 23 May.

In the final week of teaching, students will reflect on their progression plans and be encouraged to set meaningful targets to work on over the summer in preparation for their future.

Your Support

We appreciate your continued support and ask that you encourage your young person to fully engage with the Tutorial programme. Active participation will ensure they are well-informed and better prepared to make important decisions about their future education or career path.

Thank you for working with us to support your young person's progression.

Warm regards

George Marshall

Director of Pastoral and Safeguarding & Head of School (Foundation Year)
